Hastings Old Town, East Sussex.. Hastings is best known for its connection with the Battle of Hastings in 1066 which actually occurred north of the town at Senlac Hill in Battle. Hastings was one of the Cinque ports, It still has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in Europe

Since moving to Hastings in 2005 I have done numerous Paintings and etchings of the town concentrating mainly on the old town with a a separate group of images of the coastline beneath the cliffs that separate Hastings fishing beach from Rye Bay to the East.

Stretching from Rock-a-Nore to Fairlight this is a treacherous stretch of coast with shingle, rock pools, barnacle covered boulders and shifting wet sand. Periodic rockfalls and swiftly incoming tides make this almost the exclusive preserve of locals (and nudists!) and a rich source of imagery which is covered on this site by Coastal textures and leads also to Abstract

Oranges … and … lemons are two paintings that were painted side by side. As they were being done the colour of the light in each gave rise to the working title of Oranges and Lemons. It was only after several days of painting that I realised the church in the foreground of Oranges was St Clements …. The names stuck!
