This is a series of paintings done over a span of 10 years covering views of Hastings old town which is situated between two hills; The West hill and the East hill. Running down to the sea at one end, these hills give spectacular views of the rooftops of the old town nestling in the valley below. while most of the original paintings have been sold I still print limited reproduction editions of giclée prints from the high resolution scans taken of the originals. Other prints of Hastings old town can be found on the etching page of this site under Etchings of Hastings Where there is both an etching and a giclée print of the same image I will be indicating this under the image. Hastings Old Town, East Sussex.. Hastings is best known for its connection with the Battle of Hastings in 1066 which actually occurred north of the town at Senlac Hill in Battle. Hastings was one of the Cinque ports, It still has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in Europe
Since moving to Hastings in 2005 I have done numerous Paintings and etchings of the town concentrating mainly on the old town with a a separate group of images of the coastline beneath the cliffs that separate Hastings fishing beach from Rye Bay to the East.
Stretching from Rock-a-Nore to Fairlight this is a treacherous stretch of coast with shingle, rock pools, barnacle covered boulders and shifting wet sand. Periodic rockfalls and swiftly incoming tides make this almost the exclusive preserve of locals (and nudists!) and a rich source of imagery which is covered on this site by Coastal textures and leads also to Abstract

Autumn Roofs, Hastings Old Town Golden Autumnal light on roofs of Hastings, East Sussex at the seaward end of the Old Town.
Oranges … and … lemons are two paintings that were painted side by side. As they were being done the colour of the light in each gave rise to the working title of Oranges and Lemons. It was only after several days of painting that I realised the church in the foreground of Oranges was St Clements …. The names stuck!

High Street Snow
The day after boxing day 2006. A rare blanket of overnight snow coats the historic seaside town of Hastings, East Sussex. The street lamps cast an orange glow on the scene at the top of the High Street opposite the FILO, (First in last out) pub. Time for a pint and a chance to warm those frozen fingers in front of a roaring fire.
